Song-Writing

As most of you know already that I am a song-writer, I consider myself to be a natural writer which means that I write from the heart about things that have happened to me or what I have witnessed. People ask me, what inspires the song writing process work for me and where do I draw my inspiration from. Remember songs are stories and they can be told differently from the angle you choose to take, almost like a dream - you can be there in the moment or you can be watching it from the outside.

Honestly, song-writing comes from the following:

1. SUBCONSCIOUSLY
There are certain things that will fall into my lap when sitting playing a piano or playing guitar, it is almost someone whispers the melody and lyrics into my mind. It all starts off in a mumble and suddenly becomes words, a story and a small piece of heaven. Growing up - I never had the ability to say the things I was feeling but some how, I would write them down and it would be clearer. It was more therapeutic for me that way, it still is.

2. REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE
There is nothing more fun and memorable about writing about events that have transpired or are unfolding right in front of you, being present and taking in every emotion as well as all your surroundings. These stories can be about love or heartbreak, from anxiety to almost depression. These experiences in life are lessons and even though they are just periods in our lives they still are stories of times when you fell in love and the emotions that you went through in the love.

3. OTHERS EXPERIENCE
I have the ability to jump into someone else's shoes to create a story or imagine how that situation must of felt- this techniques can be very emotionally draining. It has different aspects as well, I have written songs that are in first person or in third person, it's a different perspective based on who you are in the story. Sometimes I go out with my friends and they are going through a illness or break up or some complication in their relationship, sometimes it affects me so deeply that I will write about it.

4. GENERAL WORLD VIEWS
I was born in South Africa and there are things I was brought up doing and thought was "normal" but are not considered normal. These songs are looking at society and some of the questions why people do certain things in life and what made them who they are; problems with society and social issues in the 21st century. Many cultural differences between people and understanding behavioural patterns of people. It is very interesting for me! Other topics are nature, history, life and death, nature is a fascinating thing to witness- seeing floods and the change in seasons. Topics like history and culture come together and realizing how my life would be so different back in the 1800s.

I try to stay honest to myself and honest to my music which means being real to who I am, what I believe and where I come from.
